A bill has been passed in the past to recognize May 22 as Bitcoin Pizza Day in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre. The city’s mayor, Sebastiao Melo, is credited with approving the law in late August.
A Twitter user @Akva556 announced The news followed a press statement on Wednesday.
Councilors Jesse Sangli and Alexandre Bobadra were responsible for drafting the bill after participating in a Bitcoin Pizza Day event organized by the local community in 2022. They were both inspired by lectures that explained bitcoin in detail.
Sangli said the purpose of making Bitcoin Pizza Day official is to raise awareness of decentralized finance innovations in the city of Porto Alegre, which has a current population of a record 1.5 million.
Bitcoin Pizza Day began when a user on the Bitcointalk forum named László Haníez offered 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas on May 22.
The day is seen as a turning point for crypto enthusiasts as it was the first time bitcoin was actually used as a medium of payment. At the time the price of one bitcoin was $0.0025, the total value of the price supplied in bitcoin was $41.
